Maputo, Mozambique – A combined team from the NEPAD Agency and East, Central and Southern Africa Health Community (ECSA-HC), and the Government of Mozambique have identified areas that require Technical Assistance (TA) for the successful implementation of the Southern Africa Tuberculosis and Health Systems Support (SATBHSS) project in 2017 to strengthen health systems and tackle the burden of TB.

Following approval by the National Health Scientific Research Committee of Malawi, the country has successfully completed data collection, cleaning and analysis, and validation processes for the Training Needs Assessment for TB Management. The validation meeting was held on 1st November 2017 in Lilongwe, Malawi.

TB service delivery in the Kingdom of Lesotho is impacted by long delays between sample collection and receiving test results, especially in the rural areas and townships where TB laboratories are not operating optimally. In extreme cases, this process can take as long as 3 months and there is a backlog of over 900 TB samples.

Increased globalization combined with the emergence and re-emergence of infectious diseases such as Tuberculosis has created an increased risk of disease transmission across international borders. In efforts to address this challenge, East Central and Southern Africa Health Community (ECSA-HC) organized the inaugural regional meeting of the Community of Practise (CoP) on Laboratory and Surveillance to improve cross border collaboration in surveillance of Tuberculosis and other priority diseases and strengthen laboratory systems for effective response.

According to the Semi-Annual Report, the first six (6) months of the implementation of the Southern Africa Tuberculosis and Health Systems Support (SATBHSS) project has recorded positive progress by putting in place systems that are a pre-requisite for facilitating smooth project implementation at country and regional level during the five (5) year project period.
